About the School of Law

Texas Tech University’s School of Law is known for its practical approach to legal education, which helps its students achieve high levels of success. The Law School offers a robust clinical program serving indigent clients in the West Texas area, a nationally competitive advocacy program, and two award-winning law journals. The National Jurist frequently ranks Texas Tech as a “Best Value” Law School due to its competitive tuition and high bar exam pass rate.

Texas Tech School of Law offers a learning environment that encourages interaction between law students and professors. Applying for Admission

The School of Law seeks to enhance the educational experience of all students by admitting applicants from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Applicants who possess a U.S. bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university prior to enrollment are eligible for admission. The admissions committee reviews applications holistically and on a rolling basis. Texas Tech Law reserves the right to deny admission to applicants who, in the judgment of the admissions committee, appear to be unfit in character to engage in the study or practice of law.

Applicants to Texas Tech Law must apply online via the LSAC electronic application. An application is considered complete and ready for review when the following documents have been submitted:

• Valid LSAT score
• Official transcript
• Two letters of recommendation
• Resumé
• Personal statement

Applications should be submitted to the School of Law at the earliest opportunity after September 1. The deadline for the Regular Decision is March 1.

Pre-Law Academy for Undergraduates

The Texas Tech University Pre-Law Academy is a prestigious summer program designed for undergraduate students who are interested in learning about law and pursuing a career in the legal field. Students accepted into the Pre-Law Academy will earn seven credit hours during Summer I by completing three undergraduate courses: PLAW 3101 - Legal Profession Seminar ; PLAW 4301 - Lawyering Skills: Legal Analysis and Advocacy ; and COMS 3314 - Argumentation and Debate . All seven credits count toward the Legal Studies minor .

As part of the Academy, students will learn legal analysis, legal advocacy, and legal rhetoric through an argumentation and debate lens. Among other skills and knowledge, students will learn to write a predictive legal memorandum, which will help them improve their critical thinking and writing skills. Students will also learn to give a persuasive oral argument. In addition, students will gain knowledge about applying to law school, attending law school, and practicing law.
