About the Department

This department supervises the following degree programs:

Undergraduate Program

The Department of Economics at Texas Tech University offers a dynamic and challenging undergraduate program that provides students with a solid foundation in economics, as well as a variety of options to specialize and tailor their education to their individual goals and interests.

The Department of Economics offers three undergraduate degree programs. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)  provides students with a broad liberal arts education while allowing them to specialize in economics and understand the complex relationship between consumers, producers, and governments in an economic system. The Bachelor of Science (B.S.)  is highly structured and technically oriented, ideal for students who desire an in-depth study of economics and its tools. The Bachelor of Science in International Economics (B.S.I.E.)  program combines international politics and international business with economics to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the global economy.

Visit the Department of Economics webpage for more information.

Degree Requirements. MATH 1451  (Calculus I) is recommended for all majors in the department. Students must complete the Foundational Economics coursework [ECO 2301 , 2302 , 3311 , and 3312 ] with a C- or higher before attempting any junior/senior economics courses. Additional requirements for the B.A. and B.S.I.E. include adjunct courses in statistics [MATH 2300 , 2345 , or equivalent] and for the B.S. include any adjunct courses in statistics [MATH 4342  and 4343 ]. Students choosing any of the undergraduate programs must complete all courses in the specified Communication Literacy requirement for each major. Consult with department advisor for more information.

Math Placement Examination. Students wishing to enroll in MATH 1451  must take the Math Placement Exam. View the Department of Mathematics and Statistics webpage for additional information. Previous registration for this exam is not required and there is no fee. Students are strongly encouraged to review high school level calculus concepts and skills prior to attempting the exam.

Residency Requirements. The department generally accepts transfer credits from other colleges and universities. At least 15 hours of junior/senior economics courses must be taken at Texas Tech for all majors in the department. For an economics minor, a minimum of 9 hours of economics courses must be taken at Texas Tech. This residency requirement will be waived by the department only in very exceptional circumstances.

Grading Practices. C- or higher is required in economics courses to count toward an economics major or minor. Moreover, a minimum grade of C- is required in all specific area courses in the B.S.I.E. degree program. Additionally, the adjunct statistics for each major requires a C- or higher to count. Courses specifically required for each major or minor may not be taken pass/fail.

Minor. A minor of choice is required for the B.A. degree program. A Mathematics minor is required for the B.S. degree program. No minor is required for the B.S.I.E. degree program but it is allowed. Multiple minors are allowed if the student shows other areas of interest. Consult with department advisor for specific minors helpful for roles in economics, business, law, and other professional industries.

Study Abroad. The Department of Economics does not require B.S.I.E. majors to study abroad but highly recommends it. Additionally, we encourage all majors to participate in a study abroad program when possible. Students can participate in an approved study abroad experience through the Texas Tech International Affairs Center like faculty-led programs or a Texas Tech approved reciprocal exchange program. Consult with department advisor for more information.
