Undergraduate Degrees

Interdisciplinary programs in the College of Arts & Sciences include:

General Studies and Arts and Sciences Multidisciplinary Studies Policies and Procedures

Interdisciplinary programs in the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas Tech work to facilitate student success by preparing students through innovative multidisciplinary scholarship. Interdisciplinary program academic advisors advocate for our students and endeavor to broaden their educational horizons by offering a flexible path toward graduation, no matter where in their academic journey they are. These programs allow students the opportunity to develop their own focus areas, encouraging integrative study and fostering new areas of learning and discovery by facilitating student education across many disciplines.

  • A 2.0 GPA is required for admission into these degree programs. In addition, a 2.0 GPA at Texas Tech University is required for graduation.
  • Completion of General Studies or Arts and Sciences Multidisciplinary Studies is possible through on-campus or online courses, depending upon the concentration area chosen as well as course availability.
  • Each degree plan must be reviewed by the Student Division of the College of Arts & Sciences to be considered official. This is done to ensure conformity with graduation requirements. Degree plans must be submitted to the Student Division of the College of Arts & Sciences one semester after a student has achieved 30 hours of total coursework.
  • Each degree plan must contain a minimum of 54 hours, with at least 30 of the hours inside the College of Arts & Sciences. For the General Studies major with a concentration in Arts and Sciences, all 54 hours must be within the College of Arts & Sciences.
  • 18 hours in the major must be taken in residence at Texas Tech. A minimum of 9 of those hours must be taken at the junior/senior level.
  • A minimum of 24 hours of junior/senior-level courses must be taken within the major.
  • Students must complete a minimum of two courses of communication literacy coursework in the major. At least one of those courses must be within the College of Arts & Sciences.
  • Credit by exam (ACT, AP, CLEP, DE, FLP, IB, SAT) cannot be used to meet residency requirements.
  • The Student Division will determine course substitutions and transfer course application.
  • The Student Division will be responsible for approving transfers during the last 30 hours of a degree program, as well as concurrent enrollment.
  • Courses may only apply within one concentration area on an Arts and Sciences Multidisciplinary Studies degree plan (i.e., no “sharing” between concentrations). For example, ZOOL 2403 may not apply to BOTH a Health Professions concentration and a Biology concentration.
  • A total of 40 hours of junior/senior-level coursework and 120 hours overall is required for each degree.
  • Students may not use the General Studies major as a dual or second degree.

General Studies and Arts and Sciences Multidisciplinary Studies are administered and supervised by the Student Division of the College of Arts & Sciences. For more information contact as.generalstudies@ttu.edu or 806.742.3831.
