About the Undergraduate Certificate in Translation and Interpretation

The 15-credit Undergraduate Certificate in Translation and Interpretation introduces students to the fields of translation and interpretation and provides them a basic understanding of theories and practices in these fields. The certificate does not grant professional certification, but it gives students the foundation for a career in translation and interpretation and the basis to work toward professional certification. The certificate is for degree-seeking students only.

Required Courses for all Languages

2302 of any modern language (SPAN 2607 or SPAN 2304 may be substituted)*
CMLL 3303 - Introduction to Translation and Interpretation 3 Semester Credit Hours
ENGL 3341 - Studies in Translation Practice and Theory 3 Semester Credit Hours
OR
LING 4335 - Introduction to Linguistics for Second and Foreign Language Education 3 Semester Credit Hours
*Students who place higher or test out of fourth-semester language can substitute a 3000 or 4000-level language course taught in the target language.

American Sign Language

The TTU Undergraduate Certificate in Translation and Interpretation is not equivalent to professional interpreter certification, which must be pursued through a certifying organization such as the Board for the Evaluation of Interpreters or the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

One semester of ASL 3301 as prerequisite to CMLL 3303 .
One semester of ASL 3302 , ASL 3320 , or ASL 4301 .

Arabic

One semester of ARAB 3301 or ARAB 4300 as prerequisite to CMLL 3303 .
One additional semester of ARAB 3301 or ARAB 4300 .

French

Two semesters of FREN 3302 , FREN 3303 , FREN 3304 , FREN 3306 , FREN 4302 , FREN 4303 , FREN 4304 , FREN 4305 , FREN 4308 , FREN 4315 , FREN 4317 , FREN 4322 , or FREN 4345 courses.

German

One semester of GERM 3303 , GERM 4301 , or GERM 4309 .
One additional semester of GERM 3301 , GERM 3304 , GERM 4303 , or GERM 4305 .

Japanese

One semester of JAPN 4300 as a prerequisite to CMLL 3303 .
One additional semester of JAPN 4300 .

Mandarin Chinese

One semester of CHIN 3305 as a prerequisite to CMLL 3303 .
One additional semester of CHIN 3305 or CHIN 4308 .

Russian

One semester of RUSN 3305 as a prerequisite to CMLL 3303 .
One additional semester of RUSN 3305 .

Spanish

One semester of SPAN 4309 as prerequisite to CMLL 3303 .
