Secondary Education, Undergraduate Minor

Students seeking secondary certification may major in Education in the areas of English, Math, or Science. In addition, students seeking secondary certification in other content areas may minor in secondary education. The following courses may be used by students who complete student teaching as undergraduates:

  • Required for all content areas: EDSE 3300 EDSE 4323 EDIT 3318 EDLL 4381 EDTP 3304 .
  • Also required is one of the following based on the student’s content certification area: EDML 3361  (Social Studies), EDML 3370  (Mathematics), EDML 3375  (Science), EDLL 3354  (English), EDSE 4320  (All other content areas). You may visit with a College of Education Advisor if you have questions about the content methods course.

  • In addition to the 18 hours listed, students must complete 12 hours of EDSE 4000  (Student Teaching) to be eligible for teacher certification. Program requirements include a semester of field experience with a minimum of 2 full days per week of field experience and 5 full days student teaching. Due to the nature of the program and state requirements, the start and end schedule may vary from the university schedule. Students are required to begin student teaching on the first day of their assigned district.

The minimum number of hours for a minor in secondary education is 18. Other education courses may be used in the minor with the permission of an academic advisor in the College of Education.
