About the Leadership Studies, B.S.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Leadership Studies guides and encourages the exploration of organizations and their influence on leadership in a local, state, national, and global economy. The curriculum blends course options to include articulation of educational, professional, and personal experiences through an interdisciplinary course sequence. In addition, students may choose elective courses to facilitate an interest in and appreciation for, the beneficial application of operational concepts through leadership. Students will learn leadership theories and concepts that address the needs of private, nonprofit, and government sectors.

The B.S. in Leadership Studies will provide graduates with the opportunity to advance in their careers as professionals. This degree will also provide post-traditional students with an opportunity to understand the roles and personal dynamics required to be an effective organizational leader.

Leadership Studies is an interdisciplinary major that encourages integrative learning and fosters new areas of learning across college and department boundaries. Two of the three concentration areas will be selected from the School of Professional Studies  that include teaching students to understand leadership theory applied to practice: Organizational Leadership, Integrative Studies, and Human Resources Development. (See suggested course options below). Additionally, a student will select a third concentration area of their choosing from any concentration offered by academic departments at Texas Tech University. *Note: GPA restrictions and prerequisites apply to the third area of concentration as determined by the academic college. For information on other minor and concentration areas, see individual program sections of the catalog.

Students are required to complete coursework for three concentration areas with a minimum of 12 upper-division credit hours in each concentration, core curriculum requirements, Texas Tech University graduation requirements (including 40 hours of upper-division, multicultural requirement, and foreign language), and applicable elective credit for a total of 120 semester hours. Students may pursue an academic minor instead of elective credit.

Communication Literacy Requirement. Communication literacy in the Bachelor of Science in Leadership Studies is assessed INTS 4351 : Capstone in Applied Leadership.

Grading Practices. Credits for a course in which a D is earned may not be applied toward fulfillment of the major course requirements.

Degree Plan and Intention to Graduate. Students are encouraged to file a degree plan with the University Studies Student Services office as soon as their academic goals are defined, but no later than two subsequent semesters after earning 45 credit hours. The Intent to Graduate form on Raiderlink must be submitted no later than the last day of classes of the term before graduation.  Students are encouraged to consider an academic minor to complement their major in Leadership Studies.
