About the Geosciences Master’s Program

The master’s degree in Geosciences has two options: 1) a thesis-based program for students who intend to pursue a Ph.D., research-based career, or preparation for professional employment and 2) a non-thesis program intended for students who seek advanced employment skills and/or opportunities for professional development. Both programs provide students with critical thinking skills, technical and skill proficiency in Earth and Planetary Sciences, and research experience. Requirements for the master’s degree in geosciences include completion of a minimum of 24 hours of graduate named coursework; and a minimum of 6 hours of credit for research or professional development, including internship experience.

Thesis Option. Students entering the Geosciences master’s program are strongly encouraged to write a thesis. The thesis is an original and significant piece of research. The thesis option requires a minimum of 24 hours of named graduate coursework, with a minimum of 18 in geology, geophysics or geochemistry, and 6 hours of GEOL 6000  (Thesis).

Non-Thesis Option. Students entering the Geosciences master’s program may choose to pursue their degree under a non-thesis option. Under this option students will complete a project that is aligned with their professional interests and background and will demonstrate the student’s ability to integrate Geoscience knowledge and skills. The non-thesis option requires a minimum of 21 hours GEOL, GCH, or GPH named courses, including up to 3 hours of GEOL 5010, and 3 hours of GEOL 5300  or GEOL 7000  (project hours). The remaining 6 hours may be taken in GEOG/GIST, GEOL/GPH/GCH, or from a list of approved electives.

  • 21 hours named courses in GEOL/GPH/GCH.
  • 3 hours for the project GEOL 5300  or GEOL 7000
  • 6 hours approved electives or GEOL/GPH/GCH, which may include GEOL 5010
