Political Science, M.A.


About the Political Science Master’s Program


Master’s degree work may follow either the thesis track or the comprehensive exam track. Under the thesis plan, a student is required to complete 30 hours of coursework plus 6 hours of thesis for 36 hours total. M.A. students under the thesis plan need to complete 9 hours of courses in a single major field beyond the pro-seminar, for a total of 12 hours. Under the comprehensive exam plan, a student is required to complete 36 hours of graduate courses without a thesis and to pass written comprehensive exams for both a major and a minor field. M.A. students under this plan must complete 9 hours of courses beyond the pro-seminar in their major field (for a total of 12 hours) and 6 hours beyond the pro-seminar in their minor field (for a total of 9 hours). All M.A. students are required to complete three methods courses (POLS 5381 , POLS 5382 , and POLS 5383 ) as well as three field pro-seminars (POLS 5322 , POLS 5360 , and POLS 5370 ) with a minimum grade of B- or higher.
