About the Mechanical Engineering Master’s Program

Two general plans of study are available for the master’s degree: (1) the thesis option consisting of 24 hours of graduate coursework and 6 hours of credit for the master’s thesis; and (2) the non-thesis coursework only option consisting of 30 hours of graduate coursework. The decision on which plan to follow is made jointly by the student and the advisor. Each option has a set of required core courses and a set of elective courses that are selected in consultation with the student’s advisor. Each of the two options requires a final comprehensive evaluation during the semester of intended graduation.

An alternative plan of study to obtain a master’s degree is the accelerated BS/M.S. program. ME undergraduate students are eligible to apply in the semester where they will obtain 90 credit hours in their BS degree. Students must satisfy both M.S. and BS degree course requirements; however, they can count 9 credit hours of graduate-level courses toward M.S. and electives in their BS degrees. Students who chose to take BS/M.S. cross-listed courses while applying for the accelerated BS/M.S. program must choose the M.S. course option to use it toward their graduate hour total.
