Languages and Cultures, B.A.: Classics Concentration


About the Languages and Cultures Bachelor’s Programs


The Bachelor of Arts in Languages and Cultures consists of 33 hours at the 2000-level and above, including CMLL 2305 . As part of the required hours, each of the degree’s six concentrations must include the following:

  • Classics – A minimum of 6 hours of two 4000-level Classics courses (6 hours)
  • French – A minimum of four 4000-level French courses (12 hours)
  • German – A minimum of two 3000-level courses (6 hours) and two 4000-level courses (6 hours) taught in German
  • Russian Language and Area Studies – A minimum of two 4000-level Russian and/or Slavistics courses (6 hours)
  • Chinese Language and Area Studies – A minimum of two 4000-level Chinese courses (6 hours) and CHIN 3305  and CHIN 3306  
  • American Sign Language/English Interpretation – A minimum of three 4000-level American Sign Language courses: ASL 4301 , ASL 4331 , and ASL 4332.

Students must make a C or better in departmental courses to be eligible for graduation.

Communication Literacy Requirement. Students with a concentration in Classics must complete CLAS 4310  and two Communication Literacy (CL) courses from GRK 2302 , LAT 2302 , CLAS 3320 , and CLAS 3330 .

Students with a concentration in French must complete three CL courses from FREN 3302 , FREN 3303 FREN 3306 FREN 4302 FREN 4303 FREN 4304 FREN 4305 FREN 4308 FREN 4315 , FREN 4317 , and FREN 4322 . The department requires students with a minor in French to take one CL course.

Students with a concentration in German must complete three CL courses from GERM 3301 , GERM 3303 , GERM 3304 , GERM 3306 GERM 3314 , GERM 4303 , and GERM 4305 . The department requires students with a minor in German to take one CL course.

Students with a concentration in Russian Language and Area Studies must complete three CL courses: RUSN 3305  (in residence), RUSN 4301 , and RUSN 4302 .

Students with a concentration in Chinese Language and Area Studies must complete 9 hours of CL courses (in residence) from CHIN 3305  (repeatable with different content), CHIN 3306 , and CHIN 4306 .

Students with a concentration in American Sign Language/English Interpretation must complete three CL courses (in residence): ASL 3312 , ASL 3320 , and ASL 4301 .
