Program Requirements


A minimum of 39 semester hours in Economics courses is required for the major, including ECO 2301 , ECO 2302 , ECO 3301 , and ECO 3302 ; plus 27 hours of advanced economics field courses at the 3000 or 4000 level.

Communication Literacy Requirement. The courses in the Communication Literacy plan for the B.S. in Economics are ECO 3301  and ECO 3302 

Additional Requirements. Additional requirements for the B.S. in Economics include a minimum of 18 semester hours in a minor from a scientific or technical area. Students must complete 3 credit hours in the Practical Application Area. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required to complete the degree. The sample curriculum table reflects the general degree requirements for a B.S in Economics. Consult with department advisor for more information. Calculus: Adequate training in algebra, trigonometry, and analytic geometry is a prerequisite for calculus. Prerequisites are MATH 1550 , at least 660 on SAT MATH, or at least 29 on ACT MATH.

Minor: 18 minimum hours are required. A student must choose a minor from a scientific or technical area including but not limited to the following: Advertising, Actuarial Science, Agribusiness Management, Animal Science, Anthropology, Artificial Intelligence, Astronomy, Atmospheric Science, Bioengineering, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Construction Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering (any field), Environmental Engineering, Environmental Studies (STEM courses only), Food Science, General Business, Geographic Information Science, Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Health Professions (STEM courses only), Industrial Engineering, Kinesiology, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Natural Resource Management, Nutrition, Personal Financial Planning, Physics, Plant & Soil Science, Polymers & Materials, Project Engineering, Public Health, Renewable Energy, Robotics, Sport Management, Sports Medicine, Studies in Personal Finance, Sustainability, and Writing, Design & Technical Communication.

Practical Application Area: A student must complete 3 hours in ACCT 2301 , ECO 4300 , MATH 2300 , MATH 2345 , MATH 3342 , or MATH 4342 .

Foreign Language: A student must complete 3 hours at the sophomore level or above in a single language. The prerequisite for all sophomore language courses is credit for the freshman level. This credit can be determined through a credit by examination. The score attained on the exam will determine whether the student is placed in a second-year course, a 5-hour review course, or in some cases the first or second semester of a beginning (first-year) language course. Electives: These are the only courses not requiring a grade of C or higher. Elective hours may vary to meet 120-hour requirement.
