About the Spanish Bachelor’s Program
The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish consists of 30 hours at the 2000-level and above, including a minimum of four 4000-level courses, 3 hours of grammar courses from SPAN 3305 or SPAN 3315 or SPAN 4343 , and 9 hours of communication literacy courses. A Spanish major may include 3 hours taught in English from SPAN 3390 . Students must make a C or better in departmental courses to be eligible for graduation. As part of the required hours, students are required to choose one of the degree’s three concentrations. These are:
A. Literary and Cultural Studies. The concentration consists of a total of 12 credits. The concentration requires SPAN 3304 and SPAN 3307 as the core courses. It also requires six credits (2 courses) from SPAN 4320 , SPAN 4327 , SPAN 4332 , SPAN 4337 , SPAN 4338 , SPAN 4344 , SPAN 4360 OR 43xx and SPAN 4335 taken via study abroad in Seville.
B. Hispanic Linguistics. The concentration consists of a total of 12 credits. The concentration requires SPAN 3308 as the core course (SPAN 3318 may also count as the core course). It also requires an additional nine credits (3 courses), chosen from SPAN 3318 , SPAN 4307 , SPAN 4311 , SPAN 4318 , or another upper-level course with departmental approval. Two of the four total courses must be at the 4000-level.
C. Multidisciplinary Spanish. The concentration consists of a total of 12 credits. The concentration requires SPAN 3304 or SPAN 3308 or SPAN 3318 as the core course. It also requires nine elective credits (3 courses) chosen from the SPAN 3000- or 4000-level. Two of the three elective courses for the concentration must be at the 4000-level.
Communication Literacy Requirement. Spanish majors must complete a minimum of three communication literacy courses from SPAN 3304 , SPAN 3306 , SPAN 3307 , SPAN 3308 , SPAN 3309 , SPAN 3315 , SPAN 3318 , SPAN 3344 , SPAN 3345 , SPAN 3346 , SPAN 3390 , SPAN 4306 , SPAN 4307 , SPAN 4320 , SPAN 4327 , SPAN 4337 , SPAN 4344 , and CMLL 3303 .
