Historical Performance Research and Practice Graduate Certificate

About the Historical Performance Research and Practice Graduate Certificate Program

The Texas Tech School of Music offers a Graduate Certificate in Historical Performance Research and Practice. Historical Performance (HP) is a field of musical inquiry focused on both the research and practice of historical performance processes, instruments, techniques, and repertoires. HP is particularly focused on, but not limited to, music of the pre-modern through early classic-eras, but its approach can also be applied to later musics. This resume-enhancing certificate is especially recommended for musicology, theory, choral, or vocal/instrumental performance students who wish to develop a primary or secondary specialization in this dynamic area of scholarship and performance. The completion of this certificate will also appear on the student’s final transcript, serving as an enhancement to the student’s CV and confirming for any future employer the student’s specialized experience in historical performance.

The 15-hour certificate requires 12 credits of coursework and 3 credits of Historical Performance Ensemble or equivalent. Applied instruction credits (private lessons), while recommended for those engaged in learning a historical instrument, are not required as part of the certificate, but may be recommended if the sucessful completion of a chosen project would demand it.
