About the Human Sciences Master’s Program
This interdisciplinary program is designed for learners interested in attaining a master’s degree that can be tailored to meet their unique educational goals and/or to facilitate career advancement. Graduates of this program will possess a broad academic perspective and skills that can be transferred to a number of professional contexts. This program is available to both full- and part-time students. The Master of Science in Human Sciences (MSHS) program requires a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours. The program of study is comprised of a 9-credit core curriculum as well as two elective areas of concentration (9-15 credit hours each). This degree has both a thesis and a non-thesis option. The non-thesis option culminates in a capstone learning experience that prepares students to market themselves professionally and articulate the unique skill set they gained through their studies. The thesis option involves original scholarly research and prepares students for further graduate studies (i.e., a doctoral degree). Students interested in the thesis option must successfully complete their first semester in the MSHS program, including the introductory HUSC 5300 - Interdisciplinarity in the Human Sciences and an approved research methods course, and must meet with MSHS graduate faculty to obtain their approval. Students will select two areas of concentration for their program of study. Potential options might include Community, Family, and Addiction Sciences; Interior and Environmental Design; Family and Consumer Sciences Education; Health Professions; Hospitality and Retail Management; Human Development and Family Sciences; Nutritional Sciences; and Personal Financial Planning. Students also can choose to apply coursework from select Texas Tech University graduate certificates to fulfill degree requirements. Some possible choices include Charitable Financial Planning, Early Childhood and Family Policy, Financial Health and Wellness, Gerontology, Human Sciences Education and Training, Youth Development Specialist, and Youth Program Management and Evaluation. Depending on the concentrations selected by the student for their degree plan, the degree may be completed online. |
