About the Online + Religious Studies, B.A.

The Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies (BARS) at Texas Tech University is dedicated to advancing the academic exploration of religion through exceptional scholarship and teaching that highlights its profound relevance in both local and global contexts. By fostering an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to learning, the program empowers students to gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which religion shapes human experience, culture, and society. It equips students with the critical skills necessary to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.

As the first fully online program of its kind at a public Research 1 institution in Texas, the BARS degree offers flexibility and accessibility to students, meeting the growing demand for online religious studies programs. Students will be able to pursue their personal and professional goals within their local contexts, allowing them to balance academic achievement with other responsibilities. The degree aligns with Texas Tech University’s mission to prepare ethical leaders for a globally competitive workforce.

The BARS program develops essential analytical, research, communication, and critical thinking skills, preparing graduates for success in a diverse and dynamic workforce. It offers a strong foundation for students to pursue graduate studies or directly enter the workforce while providing exposure to disciplines such as history, philosophy, ethics, sociology, and more.

By exploring society’s most deeply held beliefs and value systems, students develop a richer understanding of their communities, ultimately leading to a more nuanced appreciation of both local and global perspectives. A distinctive outcome of the BARS program is its focus on how religion influences social, political, and cultural dynamics, empowering graduates to make positive, impactful contributions in their communities. Throughout their studies, students will collaborate with faculty and peers in an engaging, technologically-enhanced learning environment, cultivating a strong sense of community and preparing them to serve as informed leaders and change-makers.

Communication Literacy Plan. A student will be required to complete three 3000- or 4000-level REL courses to complete the CL requirement in the degree. Two of these courses will be electives within the elective groupings, and the third course will be REL 4304 , which is required.
