About the Department
The department supervises the following degree programs:
Vision. The vision of the Department of Community, Family, and Addiction Sciences (CFAS) is to enrich the lives of individuals, families, and communities. To achieve this vision, the department offers programs of study in counseling sciences, addictive disorders and recovery sciences, and couple, marriage and family therapy.
Within the department there are opportunities to collaborate with faculty members in research; to experience different aspects of programs through internships, classroom apprenticeships, independent studies, and study abroad; and to participate in student organizations and activities. The department is committed to being an active and contributing member of the college, university, and surrounding communities. As a result, faculty, staff, and students are actively engaged with many university groups, community groups, and agencies in an effort to enhance the experience of students and improve the quality of life for others.
The Center for Family Systems Research and Intervention, the Center for Collegiate Recovery Communities, and the Center for Addiction Recovery Research are housed in the department.
Commitment to clinical training and research. The Center for Family Systems Research and Intervention (CFSRI) at Texas Tech is dedicated to providing unique clinical training experiences and supporting clinical research. The CFSRI operates two community mental health clinics, the Family Therapy Clinic on the TTU campus and the Children’s Behavioral Health Clinic located in the UMC hospital medical office plaza. Both clinics offer sliding fee scale therapy services to the greater West Texas community, support the clinical development of CMFT graduate students, and provide unique research laboratories for cutting edge clinical research.
Commitment to addiction recovery. Established in 1986, The Center for Collegiate Recovery Communities (CRC) at Texas Tech assists individuals recovering from drug and alcohol addiction and eating disorders with their pursuit of a college education. The CRC has created a community support and relapse prevention program, which provides an environment in which recovering students can focus on staying sober without delaying their educational goals. The CRC was selected to receive support from the federal government to develop a model to replicate collegiate community support and relapse-prevention programs at other universities.
Commitment to collaborative research. The Center for Addiction Recovery Research (CARR) was established to support TTU faculty and students in advanced research endeavors. The CARR is able to support faculty and student research using a variety of tools, including fNIR, eye tracking, and biofeedback.
Graduate Programs
The CFAS department offers a Master’s and Ph.D. in Couple, Marriage, and Family Therapy and a Ph.D. in Addictive Disorders and Recovery Studies .
