About the School of Law

With a consistently high pass rate on the State Bar Exam, the School of Law at Texas Tech University has always been a leader among Texas law schools. A small student body, a diverse faculty, and a high level of faculty interaction are only a few of the factors that promote learning and encourage interaction between law students and professors.

The School of Law offers one degree program:

  • Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.)

Because Texas Tech is the only campus in the state that is home to a major university, law school, and medical school, law students also can pursue any of the following 14 dual degree or concentration programs:

  • J.D. / Doctor of Medicine
  • J.D. / Master of Business Administration
  • J.D. / Master of Engineering
  • J.D. / Master of Public Administration
  • J.D. / Master of Science in Agricultural and Applied Economics
  • J.D. / Master of Science in Accounting (Taxation)
  • J.D. / Master of Science in Biotechnology
  • J.D. / Master of Science in Environmental Toxicology
  • J.D. / Master of Science in Personal Financial Planning
  • J.D. / Master of Science in Sport Management
  • J.D. / Business Law Concentration Program
  • J.D. / Civil Rights & Anti-Discrimination Law Concentration Program
  • J.D. / Criminal Law and Innocence Concentration Program
  • J.D. / Law and Science Concentration Program

The Texas Tech School of Law has a strong reputation for being practical in its approach to legal education, and its students consistently perform at a high level of achievement. The Law School offers a robust clinical program serving indigent clients in the Lubbock area, a nationally competitive advocacy program, and two award-winning law journals.

Applying for Admission

The School of Law seeks to enhance the educational experience of all students by admitting applicants from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Applicants who possess a U.S. bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university prior to enrollment are eligible for admission. The admissions committee reviews applications holistically and on a rolling basis. Texas Tech Law reserves the right to deny admission to applicants who, in the judgment of the admissions committee, appear to be unfit in character to engage in the study or practice of law.

Applicants to Texas Tech Law must apply online via the LSAC electronic application. An application is considered complete and ready for review when the following documents have been submitted:

  • Valid LSAT score
  • Official transcript
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Resumé
  • Personal statement

Applications should be submitted to the School of Law at the earliest opportunity after September 1. The deadline for the Regular Decision is March 1.

Pre-Law Academy for Undergraduates

The Texas Tech University Pre-Law Academy is a prestigious summer program designed for undergraduate students who are interested in learning about law and pursuing a career in the legal field. Students accepted into the Pre-Law Academy will earn seven credit hours during Summer I by completing three undergraduate courses: PLAW 3101 - Legal Profession Seminar PLAW 4301 - Lawyering Skills: Legal Analysis and Advocacy ; and COMS 3314 - Argumentation and Debate . All seven credits count toward the Legal Studies minor .

As part of the Academy, students will learn legal analysis, legal advocacy, and legal rhetoric through an argumentation and debate lens. Among other skills and knowledge, students will learn to write a predictive legal memorandum, which will help them improve their critical thinking and writing skills. Students will also learn to give a persuasive oral argument. In addition, students will gain knowledge about applying to law school, attending law school, and practicing law.

Applications for the Pre-Law Academy are typically accepted starting in late September or early October. Additional information about the Academy and the application process is available online at https://www.depts.ttu.edu/advising/prelaw/PLAcademy.php. Students also may contact Associate Dean Wendy-Adele Humphrey at wendy.humphrey@ttu.edu. Students should consult an academic advisor to get information about how the Academy courses will fit into a degree plan.
