About the Department

This department administers the following degree and certificate programs:

Created in 2023, the Department of Interdisciplinary Arts supervises several longstanding degree and certificate programs formerly housed in the Talkington College of Visual and Performing Arts. The Ph.D. in Fine Arts was launched in 1972 as only the second doctoral interdisciplinary arts degree in the nation, and remains a unique crucible for inter-, cross-, and transdisciplinary study and inquiry in an increasingly compartmentalized academic environment.

The degree offers four tracks, three of them based in the scholarly arts disciplines of Art, Music, and Theatre, as well as an Interdisciplinary Arts track. All students, regardless of track, take five foundational courses in the methodologies, histories, and philosophies of art, dance, music, and theatre, based on a cohort model. The bulk of the remaining coursework in any track flows according to the student’s interests guided by faculty advisors. The Art track’s concentration in critical inquiry allows for a broad range of curricular and career applications; the Music track offers concentrations in arts administration, music education, music theory, and musicology. The Theatre track offers concentrations in arts administration, design, theatre history and criticism, and performance and pedagogy.

The Interdisciplinary Arts track allows students to choose two or three concentrations from both inside and outside the Talkington College of Visual and Performing Arts. Current students in this track are combining one or more arts disciplines with anthropology, computer science, educational curriculum and instruction, and psychology.

The Department of Interdisciplinary Arts also offers an interdisciplinary degree at the undergraduate level, the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts Studies . This degree is ideal for students preparing for careers in creative media industries, or who plan to pursue graduate degrees in this area. There are two curricular tracks offered with the BAAMT program; the arts media track emphasizes traditional studio-based work with interdisciplinary training in electronic and digital media, while the arts technology track blends design with a focus on computing applications and technology.

The Department of Interdisciplinary Arts also offers a number of certificates at both graduate and undergraduate levels, as detailed on the DIA departmental website.
