About the Pre-Veterinary Medicine Option Program


Although Texas Tech does not offer a degree in pre-veterinary medicine, students may still prepare for veterinary school by completing the minimum admission requirements. A pre-veterinary medicine advisor is available to assist students in selecting courses and degree programs.

2Prior to admission into the TTU DVM Professional Program, applicants must: 1) be a resident of the State of Texas as defined by the THECB; 2) complete at least two years and 60 semester credit hours of full time post-secondary instruction at an accredited university by the end of the spring semester before enrollment  (Applicants are assessed on their last four, full-time, semesters at the time of application. Applicants who are completing their fourth semester at the time of application will be assessed on their final semester when it is completed. Full-time includes enrollment in at least 12 semester credit hours each semester for undergraduate students and 9 semester credit hours for graduate students); 3) possess a minimum cumulative 3.00 GPA during the most recent two full-time years at an accredited institution; and 4) have completed or be enrolled in the General Microbiology and Biochemistry prerequisites in the fall semester of their application (in addition to the prerequisite work required by spring).

3Prior to admission into the TAMU DVM Professional Program, applicants must have: 1) completed 53 hours of prerequisite course work by the end of the spring semester prior to admission into the program; 2) completed or be enrolled in the following prerequisites prior to the fall semester of their application (in addition to the prerequisite work required by spring): Organic Chemistry I, Physics I, Biochemistry I; 3) completed the majority of their science prerequisites by the semester of their application; and 4) completed all prerequisite courses within the past 10 years. (Note: Any required coursework taken more than 10 years ago will need to be retaken.)

Recommended Curriculum


Pre-Veterinary Medicine


This curriculum is designed to qualify students for entrance into the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine. Students who complete this curriculum may either apply for admission to the school of veterinary medicine or change to one of the four-year curricula in the university. The minimum course requirements for enrollment into the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine is at least two years and 60 semester credit hours (including the required prerequisites) of full time, post-secondary, instruction at an accredited university by the end of the spring semester before enrollment. The following is a suggested sequence of courses to complete these requirements.
