The completely online Master’s Degree in Language & Literacy is designed to prepare reading and literacy leaders in K-12 school districts and other educational settings. This degree is an ideal option for a career as a literacy coach, ELAR instructional coach, literacy curriculum leader, reading specialist, post-secondary reading instructor, professional development facilitator, literacy team leader, or classroom teacher. Graduates of this program develop in-depth knowledge of literacy processes that lead to increased student engagement and achievement with literacy tasks. Graduates will be able to confidently apply their knowledge to evaluate, design, and implement effective literacy instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse learners. The Language & Literacy graduate will also demonstrate the ability to sustain professional collaboration with a variety of educational stakeholders to foster ongoing growth as a literacy leader and practitioner.

Coursework in this program addresses topics such as reading comprehension of complex text, the science of teaching reading, culturally responsive pedagogy, writing process pedagogy, adolescent literacy, developmental literacy, early literacy methods, literacy assessment, language acquisition, teaching multilingual and transnational youth, translanguaging, digital literacies, and content area and disciplinary literacies.

Advanced certification as a Professional Reading Specialist is available as part of this degree.

Concentration in Dual Credit English. The Master’s Degree in Language and Literacy with a concentration in Dual Credit English is designed to meet the growing demand for dual credit English coursework in secondary schools. The purpose of this credential is to provide secondary English teachers with the disciplinary and pedagogical knowledge needed to help students successfully transition from high school to college learning. In addition to developing expertise in literary and composition studies, coursework in the Language and Literacy program specializes in methods designed to accelerate students’ ability to handle the literacy demands of college-level reading and writing tasks. Coursework provides numerous opportunities to connect learning to real-world contexts for dual credit instruction. The Master’s Degree in Language and Literacy is also designed to prepare literacy leaders in K-12 school districts. Graduates will develop in-depth knowledge of literacy processes and will be able to confidently apply their knowledge to evaluate, design, and implement effective literacy instruction for diverse learners.
