Music Cognition Graduate Certificate

About the Graduate Certificate in Music Cognition

The graduate certificate in Music Cognition introduces students to interdisciplinary research in music and the cognitive sciences. Students will examine the sensory and cognitive processes involved in perceiving, composing, and performing music, and conduct laboratory research using both behavioral and computational methods. The certificate benefits students who are 1) preparing for commercial jobs in the music technology sector and/or subsequent post-doctoral studies in fields like psychology, cognitive neuroscience, psychoacoustics, and music information retrieval; or 2) wishing to broaden their academic/research experience and credentials while pursuing careers in traditional academic disciplines like music theory, music education, music composition, musicology, or performance.

The certificate is open to students from the Schools of Music and Psychology, as well as from other degree programs at Texas Tech University. No formal training in music is required, but an ability to read Western notation is strongly encouraged.
