About the Pre-Veterinary Medicine Option Program
Although Texas Tech does not offer a degree in pre-veterinary medicine, students may still prepare for veterinary school by completing the minimum admission requirements. A pre-veterinary medicine advisor is available to assist students in selecting courses and degree programs.
The following courses and requirements are a summary of the minimum admission requirements for Texas veterinary schools. Students interested in applying to a Veterinary Medicine program are highly encouraged to contact the program of interest for specific requirements and possible changes.
1Prior to admission into the TTU DVM Professional Program, applicants must: 1) be residents of Texas or New Mexico (less than 10% of the class will consist of New Mexico residents); 2) complete at least 2 years of full-time post-secondary instruction and 48 semester credits from a regionally accredited college or university by the end of the spring semester prior to enrollment; and 3) possess a minimum overall 2.9 GPA in all coursework and a minimum 2.9 science GPA. Students must receive a C or higher grade in all required coursework. Prerequisite courses must be completed within the last 10 years prior to admissions. Exceptions to this may be considered on a case-by-case basis based on a holistic review of other coursework or experiences by the Admissions Committee. Courses must be completed at a regionally accredited college or university. Coursework may be in progress or planned at the time of application but must be completed by the end of the spring semester of the year of matriculation. Advanced placement credits must appear on college transcripts to be counted toward required credits—they must have a specific subject title, number, and credits listed to be accepted.
2Prior to admission into the TAMU DVM Professional Program, applicants must have: 1) completed all of the 53 hours of prerequisite course work by the end of the spring semester prior to matriculation into the DVM program; 2) completed or be enrolled in and achieve a grade of C or better for the following prerequisites by the fall semester of their application: Organic Chemistry I with lab, Physics I with lab, Biochemistry I; 3) completed the majority of their science prerequisites by the semester of their application; and 4) completed all prerequisite courses within the past 10 years. (Note: Any required coursework taken more than 10 years ago will need to be retaken.) All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.
Pre-Veterinary Medicine
The following curriculum is designed to qualify students for entrance into the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine. This curriculum is not designed to qualify students for entrance into other Veterinary Medicine programs. Not all the courses in the following curriculum are required – some are only recommended. Students who complete this curriculum may either apply for admission to the school of veterinary medicine or change to one of the four-year curricula in the university. The minimum course requirements for enrollment into the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine is at least two years and 60 semester credit hours (including the required prerequisites) of full-time, post-secondary, instruction at an accredited university by the end of the spring semester before enrollment. The following is a suggested sequence of courses to complete these requirements.
