About the Renewable Energy Bachelor’s Program

Rapid growth in the renewable energy industry has produced an increase in demand for a well-educated workforce. Texas Tech University, already a pioneer in wind energy education, has developed educational programs to meet these expanding needs and educate future leaders in the renewable energy field. All students on the 2022-23 or later catalog years will be pursuing a B.S. in Renewable Energy. The B.S. in Wind Energy will be phased out August 31, 2023.

The Bachelor of Science in Renewable Energy prepares students for a career in multiple segments of the industry by offering an interdisciplinary curriculum, from education on the characteristics of renewable resources to instruction on project development and management. The versatile multidisciplinary nature of the degree plan makes Texas Tech’s renewable energy program unique. A 2.25 cumulative Texas Tech GPA is required for entrance into the program.

Degree Requirements. Students will maintain a minimum 2.25 institutional GPA and must follow course prerequisites for all courses as stated in their degree plan requirements. Coursework in a renewable energy degree must total a minimum of 120 semester hours, including 46 hours of the university’s core curriculum, 47 hours of renewable energy core courses, 3 hours of a global component, and 24 hours of applied electives.

Global Component. In today’s globalized wind energy job market, students who are exposed to a foreign language, participate in a study abroad program, or gain job experience through an internship with an international company are considered more marketable and competitive.

Students will complete the College of Arts & Sciences foreign language requirement by completing 3 hours at the sophomore level or above in a single language and by choosing from the following global component options:

  • Study Abroad Option. Complete an approved study abroad experience through the International Texas Tech Center, a Texas Tech approved reciprocal exchange program, or a faculty-led program. Students must enroll in and successfully complete 3 credit hours of coursework with a grade of C or better to satisfy 3 credit hours of the global component. Departmental consent required.
  • Internship Option. Complete an approved internship with an international company, either in the U.S. or abroad, related to the wind energy field. Two hundred hours of job-related experience and a written report are required to earn 3 credit hours of internship credit. Internships should be completed during the student’s junior or senior year of coursework. Instructor approval required.

Grading Practices. Credits for a Renewable Energy or Wind Energy course in which a grade of D or lower is earned may not be applied toward the fulfillment of the Renewable Energy degree, minor, or certificate. No course may be used more than once on a degree plan unless it has the statement “may be repeated for credit” in the official published course description.

Communication Literacy Requirement. Communication literacy in Renewable Energy is evidenced by competence in reading, writing, debating, software skill and interpretation, and presenting. The BSRE academic committee supports a holistic approach to developing communication literacy in our student population. Students will develop communication literacy fundamentals in various formats like small analysis papers and in-class debates and then proceed to more nuanced forms of communication literacy by more in-depth written work and public presentations. Communication Literacy courses for the Renewable Energy major are RE 3315 , RE 4310 , RE 4311 .

Minor. A minor is not required but is encouraged. Consult with an advisor for specific minors helpful in the Renewable Energy industry.
