About the Department

This department supervises the 120-hour Bachelor of Arts in Journalism  and the 120-hour Bachelor of Arts in Electronic Media and Communications  (EMC) degree programs.

Communication Literacy (CL) Plan


Electronic Media and Communications. Students majoring in electronic media and communications are expected to demonstrate communication proficiency in courses across the degree curriculum. In particular, the electronic media and communications faculty wish to ensure that students are first and foremost capable writers, but also that they are able to communicate visually, digitally, aurally, analytically, and among various cultural and social groups. The CL plan for electronic media and communications majors is comprised of 18 credits (six courses): EMC 4320 , JOUR 2310 , or MCOM 2320 ; EMC 3358  or EMC 3335 ; EMC 3370  or EMC 4370  or EMC 4375 ; JEM 2301 , JEM 2302 .

Journalism. Students majoring in journalism are expected to demonstrate communication proficiency in courses across the degree curriculum. In particular, the journalism faculty wish to ensure that students are first and foremost capable writers, but also that they are able to communicate visually, digitally, aurally, within an organization, and interpersonally among various professional constituencies. The CL plan for the journalism major is comprised of 15 credits (five courses): JOUR 2310 , JOUR 3311 , JOUR 3314 , JOUR 4350 ; ADV 4313  or COMS 3332  or EMC 3358  or JOUR 3370  or PR 4351 .
